NICHD has released for public comment the first three of nine white papers outlining a scientific vision for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). According to the announcement, the first three white papers, which focus on reproduction, plasticity, and development are part of a comprehensive process that will provide the basis for a vision statement of research priorities to further the NICHD mission and will serve as a basis for developing NICHD programs and activities over the next decade.
Papers from the other workshops will be released, and comments will be accepted until mid-June. On June 23 and 24, the Institute will host a meeting where invited participants will discuss the papers, comments, and what has been missed by the dialogue to date. Over the two days, the attendees will select 3 to 5 specific projects that the community should be pursuing over the next 5 or 10 years. Institute staff will combine feedback from the papers and large meeting into a “Vision Document.” In the fall, the Institute’s advisory council will review and critique the draft Vision Document. The document will be published in a scientific journal and posted on the NICHD home page.
